CC1101 Initial Evaluation Questions

We are considering utilizing the subject device in a new series of consumer products.  To date the CC1101 user manual has been reviewed along with several application notes.  However, given that the user manual (UM) only provides overview information, several questions still remain - it is hoped that persons on this forum could provide further illumination.

Our current plan is to utilize the CC1101 in a FHSS mode, and to that end we are trying to determine the MPU overhead.  It is not clear from the UM whether the MPU need only perform a one time setup of CC1101 registers after which the CC1101 then automatically cycles through, perfoming the frequency hopping, and the MPU only need fill the Tx Stack, or does the MPU need to specify each frequency hop, prior to filling the Tx Stack?  Application Note AN014 appears to be of no help as it only refers to the use of the obsolete devices; CC1000, CC900 & CC400.

Regarding Calibration: According to past posts on this forum, it appears that frequency calibration need only be performed infrequently, if at all - only if a target device is expected to experience substantial temperature changes:  Is this accurate?

Regarding architecture:  The frequency band has not been decided on, although the 900Mhz is currently favored.  However, in the end a decision maybe made to go to the more crowded 2.4GHz band.  In reviewing the architectures of the CC1101 and CC2500, it appears that they are basically identical, except for their respective operating frequencies.  In other words with reference to setup and programming, understanding the operation of one, is understanding the operation of the other:  Is this an accruate assesment?

Finally is there a more detailed CC1101 documantation for setup an programming (documentation that would include examples) other then the users manual?

We have used the CC1100 and more recently the CC1101 in a number of applications. We also developed a couple of modules using the CC1101. Regarding the CC1100 to CC1101 migration, our experience is that most if not all the various configurations of the CC1100 apply to the CC1101.

For FHSS, the specific details would have to be looked at.. I suggest you follow page 57 of the CC1101 specs and look at your specific hopping timing requirements.

In most of the applications you can have the calibration done if required by operating conditions. There are a couple of modes where you can calibrate as you transition between radio states.

Yes, the CC2500 and the CC1101 are extremely similar.. other than operating frequencies. I still recommend some of the earlier CC1100 application notes that used to be very solid.

The biggest problem we currently face is the fact that there is no stock on CC1101s.. everything indicates chips would apparently be available by the beginning of next year.. I hope that occurs..

Thanks very much for the reply.

I wasn't aware of the supply limitations; just how new is this device?  You seem to be concerned that supply might not even be available next year.  I am still dismayed at the lack of detailed (i.e. with examples) programming information from a company like TI.  We been reviewing the market and while there appears to be several companies allegedly producing competing chips, the companies do not appear large enough to supply a significant market - or in some cases even survive.  Have your organization reviewed alternate sources, and do you have any suggestions?
